Usergenerated Politics - The case of CDMAG in Belarus

After the presentation of Demos, and the observation that European youngsters have lost their faith in politics, nothing could be more of a counterpoint than the case of CDMAG from Belarus as presented by Iryna Vidanava.

Belarus knows a fierce dictatorship: State propaganda with state monopolized media, restriction of personal freedom and a hostile political climate, which at the same time is a fertile ground for resistance.
Since the last presidential elections in 2006, a new generation of activists has emerged. Internet access and new media manage to bridge virtual & real activism and created a new virtual generation.

Iryna introduces 34 multimedia magazine, a nationwide youth print magazine for 18-24 yrs old that was closed down by authorities after 10 years and became a CDMAG.

Creating an alternative public space
CDMAG aims to create an alternative public space next to state-controlled and regulated media. It is not overtly political, but presents views different to the state-monopolized ones. It is pro-democratic, linking politically active youth with creative counterculture of young people in Belarus.
The new CD-format has also increased content possibilities- CDMAG has become a much more substantial publication.

Publish offline!
Internet access is still limited and very expensive in Belarus. Also, online publishing is heavily censored. Belarus takes Chinese censorship as an example.. Another advantage of the CD format is that it’s not restricted by or subject to the new Law on Media which is very restrictive on old media & also includes heavy restriction on online media.

Distribution is hand-to-hand, and operates on a system of trust; copying is highly encouraged.
CDMAG is introducing key ideas, events & people to a general youth audience. Contribution of readers and users to the controversial content of the magazine is encouraged via different means, i.e. the Belarusian Dream Contest which invited the youth to voice their ideas about the future.

While general young Europeans take an online environment for granted and interest in politics is fading, the story of CDMAG brings one back to the basics. An example of inventive creative activism that can inspire many.
