State of the Arts, the national conference for the arts and culture sector, is returning for its third year on Tuesday 14 February 2012 with an exciting programme based around the artist's role in a changing society.

Held at the Lowry, Salford, the event is hosted in conjunction with the BBC, Salford City Council and Manchester City Council.

Contributors at this year's event include: journalist and television presenter Kirsty Wark; choreographer Arelene Phillips; Alex Poots, Festival Director, Manchester International Festival; and Michael Morris, Co-Director, Artangel. They will come together to discuss themes ranging from 'Artists boosting the creative economy' to 'Artists and the imagination'.

On Monday 13 February, delegates will also have the opportunity to attend pre-conference arts events curated by Manchester International Festival. The special programme includes a performance from world music duo Amadou and Mariam; a lecture by renowned theatre director Robert Wilson; and a private view of Whitworth Art Gallery's Cotton: Global Threads exhibition, featuring new work from Yinka Shonibare, Lubaina Himid and Jeremy Deller.
