The project “Getting Smaller” will bring together an international audience of civil society, students, scholars and NGO representatives for a series of evening events, organised by the Brussels branches of six National Institutes for Culture. Getting Smaller is the central theme to be discussed. Today’s EU is the result of a process lasting over 60 years that has seen member states gradually adapt to new European realities. In this sense, the notion of Getting Smaller is closely connected to the concepts of sharing sovereignty and decision making responsibilities, learning from others and departing from received wisdom. Today, such notions are becoming increasingly important as economic crises, geopolitical shifts and questions about language and identity put new strains on the EU. Can we turn these situations to our advantage, and how? Which strategies would enable us to make good use of our experience of Getting Smaller? - Curious? Le projet “Getting Smaller” réunira un public international de représentants de la société civile, d’étudiants, d’écoliers et d’ONG autour d’un cycle de manifestations organisées par les représentations bruxelloises de six instituts culturels nationaux. Les débats porteront sur le thème du Getting Smaller. L’U.E. telle que nous la connaissons aujourd’hui est le résultat d’un processus de plus de 60 ans qui a vu des États membres s’adapter progressivement aux nouvelles réalités européennes. Dans ce sens, la notion de rétrécissement est intimement liée aux concepts de partage de la souveraineté et des responsabilités dans les prises de décision, de partage des expériences et de mise en pratique des conseils donnés par les autres. Ces notions deviennent aujourd’hui de plus en plus importantes dans la mesure où les crises économiques, les bouleversements géopolitiques incessants et les questions linguistiques et identitaires créent de nouvelles tensions en Europe. Pouvons-nous tourner ces situations à notre avantage et si oui, comment? Quelles stratégies nous permettraient de faire bon usage de notre expérience dans la perte de grandeur? Intéressés ?
