What about national seasons in different countries – is it still a good way to promote our culture? Nowadays it is a little bit old-fashioned, isn’t it? What would you say for making something more common and international. Like “street-art season” or “gay literature season” or “feminism season” or “no logo season” etc. Shouldn’t we find a new way to promote those national great things we are creating without those “national seasons”?

Ministry of Culture and IAM don't form a very in-vogue team, do they? I was interested in Nova Polska - national season in France and I must admit they had some interesting, quite modern parts, athough obvious in choice - Masłowska in literature, Sosnowska in visual arts, Fiszz in music, Warlikowski in theatre etc. At least there was no reason to blush for them. If the trend survives, there may still be a chance for national seasons.

I totally agree with you, however, I would like to ask you a question concerning culture/arts we know and culture/arts we do not know. In Poland there is a wide range of cultural events presenting culture of a country (which is usually a sketchy presentation). For experts, and people interested in culture of a certain country it is not worth attending such an event. For those who are not that deeply involved in culture of a country it is a great opportunity to get an idea what the culture is like. So I think culture is often recognized as introduction to a country. What do you think?

Agreed - Raymond Williams is said to have identified over 700 variant contemporary uses of the word 'culture'! You only need to consider the mess the EU gets itself into trying to deal with 'cultural policy' to appreciate how unhelpful the term is, unless it is tied down to some real meaning in properly defined contexts as appropriate. One of the negatives, for me, about so-called 'national seasons' is that they usually reflect either the view of a government or its metropolitan establishment (international curator mafia etc) which is largely unrecognisable to most of the people who actually live in whichever country. Yes, of course, art will usually reflect local or regional roots and characteristics and to some extent that may seem to be contained withi a nation. But remember Massimo d'Azeglio's comment to Victor Emmanuel II after 1860 - "We have made Italy: the real problem now is how to create Italians". The French answer to that question was by suppressing local and regional cultural identities! (I think it was Joan Miro who said something like "no art in any medium can have universal significance unless it is first rooted in local meaning" . That's the problem with a lot of 19th century 'Orientalism' which was used by artists, composers, choreographers, writers as a shallow decorative feature purely for 'exotic' effect.

What about national seasons in different countries – is it still a good way to promote our culture? Nowadays it is a little bit old-fashioned, isn’t it? I was interested in Nova Polska - national season in France and I must admit they had some interesting, quite modern parts, athough obvious in choice - Masłowska in literature, Sosnowska in visual arts, Fiszz in music, Warlikowski in theatre etc. At least there was no reason to blush for them. If the trend survives, there may still be a chance for national seasons.

I totally agree with you, however, I would like to ask you a question concerning culture/arts we know and culture/arts we do not know.
