Creativity social, educational and economic potential will be once more considered this end of March, 26-27th in Praha. The Forum for Creative Europe is an initiative of the current European Year of Creativity and Innovation under the auspices of the Czech EU Presidency. Experts, policy makers, NGOs and EU institutions will discuss and encourage the role of culture and the arts in this agenda in Europe.
Gottfried Wagner is the director of the European Cultural Foundation and one of the participants and speakers to this Forum. He shares with us, beforehand, his view Against the Fetishising of Creativity.
Creativity, according to his article, is being used as a post-industrial mantra and universal criteria for success in nowadays global economy. Europe is as well using creativity as a panacea for repositioning itself in the world map.
Yet, he argues, the main challenges rose by creativity relate to how to nurture “good” creativity. This skill can be nurtured by well being and equality, but also out of poverty and fear. History has shown us that results differ and matter enormously.
Hence it is time to move on from an apology of creativity to a new “creative citizenship” made of cooperation, responsibility, engagement, sustainability and humanity. The arts and culture have certainly a major task here, given that we need a new knowledge besides science and technology to imagine and build up this new world.
Then again, how can we move on from buzz words to action? Gottfried Wagner talks about a “new public interest”. Civil society, he claims, will become as important as the state and the private sector. So besides improving political conditions and institutions, there is hard work ahead for all of us too. Are we up to this challenge?
