The organisation aims to 'serve international cultural interests' and to 'develop common cultural principles that will unite the peoples of Europe'. It publishes studies on European culture, organises cultural meetings, runs European programmes in cooperation with other European countries and is a venue for European cultural events.The centre is under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and it was initially supported by the Council of Europe.
