Even the term database was originally formed within computer industry, its meanings were extended with its popular use and its definition also incorporates non-electronic databases. Database means an organised corpus of data. The term was used since 60’s, and in 70’s it became common word in Europe.

Why am I talking about database? In this blog I am trying to find some mutual framework for certain published projects in the Case Study section and inspiration comes from all sides… Yesterday, I’ve received information about new project Touradero which tends to create database of cultural venues. It’s designed as a platform for artists to find venues. All users are invited to participate as creators or just as users. Even it has just started I utterly believe that it can be very useful database for organisations and artists.

And when we are talking about collecting data and organizing them systematically, you already know that in the sections Directory, Funding, Culture News or Resources for Research you can find numerous useful data for your work. But take a look which projects in the Case Study section contain artistic and cultural data. Even they do not have an idea of creating database and do not use the structure which is achieved by organising the data according to the database model, I think that we can treat them as a very useful online resources, sometimes as a databases.

Transitland EUROPA is a collaborative project that aims to create a video archive of 100 works spanning 20 years, starting from the fall of the Berlin wall.

Translate aims to explore the political articulation of the notion of cultural translation in artistic practice.

By commissioning photographers Changing Faces explores how the European work culture changed as the European Union expanded to include new accession countries.

Using digital photography and new media, Signs of the City – Metropolis Speaking aims for a multi-level engagement with the visual “surface” of European cities beyond the familiar tourist clichés. Young people in Berlin, London, Sofia and Barcelona work with professional artists to generate an inventive online image database: a contemporary archive providing free access, interaction and use.

Children's Heritage Interactive Models for Evolving Repositories is an open platform enhancing children's use of new media in order to create, search and modify networked information resources about cultural heritage.

Republicart is a transnational multilingual platform and research project exploring and developing progressive practices in public art.

As usual, I invite you to add your project as a Case Study.
