Opis projektu

The "Endangered Particle" project began with a series of photographs of burnt-down landscapes in five tourist locations on the Adriatic coast (the islands of Bisevo and Hvar, Ucka mountain, the Dubrovnik hinterland and the island of Solta). The photographs were taken in the period between 2003 and 2007 (tracing the changes and recovery of some, and new destructions of other locations).

Photographs were presented in the galleries, in Croatia and abroad. The next phase was an exhibition in the shop windows of Zagreb, an exhibition, promotion and production of a trial series of objects necessary for summer vacation (primarily the ever popular flip-flops), bearing images from the photographs of burnt down areas.

Places that have suffered from forest fires due to extensive tourism have become a tourist product, while a pure artistic project has become a commercial product design with the intention of establishing a connection between the sectors: business (production and commerce), state institutions responsible both for protecting the environment and for economic development and civic organisations on national and local levels. The aim is for all of the included stakeholders to benefit from taking part in the project.

Part of the income from sales of the produced objects would be designated for the re-forestation of one or more areas that were burned in the fires.

The "Endangered Particle" includes:

  • Photographic exhibition in Gallery Fonticus, Grožnjan, Croatia, 2004
  • Photographic exhibition in Gallery Miroslav Kraljević, Zagreb, Croatia, 2005
  • UrbanFestival, Zagreb, Croatia, 2008 (exhibition and promotion of beach accessoires - fashion show)
  • Exhibition of photographs and beach accessories in Gallerie Raum Plus, Weidhofen, Austria, 2008
  • Exhibition and promotion of beach accessoires - fashion show, ClubTure festival, Rijeka, Croatia, 2008
  • Exhibition of photographs and beach accessories in Gallery Ghetto, Split, Croatia, 2008
  • Exhibition of photographs and beach accessories in Gallerie IFA, Berlin, Germany, 2008
  • Developing a business plan and fundraising, in cooperation with an expert (Andrija Vranić)
  • Round table and public discussion – participants from all the three above-mentioned sectors (business sector, state institutions, art field)
  • Exhibition of photographs and beach accessories in Gallerie IFA, Stuttgart, Germany, 2008/2009

This complex art-communicational-ecological project includes many different segments and therefore many different activities. The Dolphin's Dream brings into the project specific knowledge of protection of the environment, re-forestation and sensitising the public about these problems, while [BLOK] brings into the project knowledge and experience in formatting artistic segments and initiating art-communicational processes.

The organisation Dolphin's Dream deals with the protection of the environment and cultural heritage, and the organisation [BLOK] works on hybrid artistic research projects focused on re-thinking social phenomena and urban structure.

The Project "Endangered Particle" widens artistic action to the field of social entrepreneurship and therefore requires collaboration between different sectors. The starting points for the collaboration are evident and clear, and the action field of the partner organisations in the project is complementary: there is an emphasised participative dimension, as [BLOK]'s action focus, and work on solving problems of burned areas, which fits into the mission and goals of the Dolphin's Dream.

Untill June 2008, the project was produced in the framework of UrbanFestival (financed by the Ministry of Culture of Croatia and City Council for Culture, Zagreb), and the promotion and honorarium for performers through the platform Clubture.

After many positive reactions (from the media and commercial sector), organisers were stuck without having the appropriate approach to potential producers. They started collaborating with an expert who will create a business plan as well as establishing contacts with appropriate institutions.

"We would suggest that different sectors should collaborate and be open towards different modus, which has been developed and proposed by some contemporary artistic works.

Such a complex art-communicational project can not be realised without cooperation. On another level the cooperation itself is the object (topic) and goal of the project." (Barbara Blasin and Vesna Vukovic/UrbanFestival, Zagreb)
