The Netherlands representative of EUNIC (European National Institutes of Culture),, SICA and Istituto Italiano di Cultura have teamed up for the second debate in the spring – summer series on European creative cities.

The session today invited Mr. Alfieri, the Commissioner for Culture of the city of Turin to present and Neil Wallace (Glasgow Cultural Capital 1990) to moderate. Alfieri outlined the planning in developing one of the most radically recreated cities in Europe in the past decade.

To focus on one element of the presentation Alfieri described leading up the Olympics Games in 2006, outlining key strategical planning put into place (noteworthy for any prospective creative city):
• Integration of the metropolitan area to an international area
• Construct the metropolitan area
• Develop training and research as a strategic resource
• Promote enterprise and employment
• Promote Turin as a city of culture, tourism, commerce and sport
• Improve the urban quality of life

The selection of key cultural spaces and resources shown in the session were impressive: new museums, renovated historic buildings, new theatre and art spaces, cultural educational spaces and international platforms for exhibiting.

The first session’s report on Linz and Wroclaw is available here - come back later for the second session on Turin. To attend the forthcoming debates on other creative cities contact the SICA Secretariaat at e -
