if:book was commissioned by the literature department of Arts Council England (ACE) to gather an overview of how companies, organisations and individuals are using Web 2.0 to market fiction, poetry and live literature; to spot writing talent; to guide readers; and to create, share and review writing.
The report looks at opportunities that digitalisation offers to writers, publishers and other literature organisations. It also looks at achieving greater sustainability/self sufficiency or lower costs for organisations as a result of use of technology. Finally it looks at the role of digital media in developing audiences and increasing participation.
The core of the report lies in the case studies from the commercial and the subsidised/funded sectors. A baseline questionnaire was developed, covering: technology, site maintenance, resourcing and future hopes and needs. In addition to the interviews, extensive web-based research was conducted, covering both UK and international literature organisations.
