Interesting dynamics are at play on the cultural scene in Arab countries. An independent sector is emerging, which opens up space for contemporary artists and has an impact on the role and accountability of governments in cultural life. This book provides and introduction to the realities of public cultural administration and policy making in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia. A pioneering tool for policymakers and practitioners, both int he region and and in the West.
Produced by the European Cultural Foundation, Boekman Foundation and Culture Resource (Al Mawred Al Thaqafy), the publication presents for the first time in English, cultural policy frameworks of Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia. The content is organised in a comprehensive format, profiling the eight countries with analytical and independent points of view by international experts. The book is a pioneering tool for policymakers, researchers and practitioners in the region and in the rest of the world. The research is based on the methodology of the European Compendium of cultural policies and trends, applied for the first time in the Arab region.
The book has been released in the framework of a regional project for building knowledge base for cultural policy development and cooperation in the Arab Mediterranean region - a joint initiative by the ECF, Culture Resource (Al Mawred Al Thaqafy), Boekman Foundation, DOEN Foundation and the British Council.
