Reinventing the City: Participation and Innovation

Nancy Duxbury | 23 Apr 2012, 08:11

Summer School - Lisbon

Monday to Saturday, 2-7 July 2012

The Summer School Reinventing the City is structured as an exchange of national and international experiences about interventions in the city by citizens' movements. Intended for graduate students from various countries, it draws from active methodologies that include site visits, Pecha Kuchas, debates, seminars and formal and informal contacts with leaders of local collective movements.

The purpose of the Summer School is to provide participants with the capacity for critical reflection on processes of action in the city while identifying theoretical frameworks, methodological tools and results of urban and social intervention.

The course is based on the analysis of case studies, with visits to places that permit participants to take a reflective approach and develop field records based on the concrete situations observed or narrated. These visits, or presentations of situations, will be followed by theoretical and methodological presentations and discussions of the processes of urban intervention.

The Summer School aims to deepen participants’ knowledge about the potentials and limitations of processes for recreating life as the shared responsibility of (almost) anonymous citizens who are the precursors of a society of transition – a society that is more participatory, more inclusive and more environmentally friendly – and at the same time identify drivers of change and social innovation that may be central to new forms of participative intervention in the city.

If you participate in processes of collective organization in the city, are responsible for urban intervention projects, or are interested in social change and forms of participation in the city, this Summer School will interest you.

The central themes to be discussed in this Summer School are:

  • Participation in the city and processes of democratization
  • The productive city and local economic development
  • Social networks in the city and creative urban cultures
  • Urban regeneration as a participatory process
  • The sustainable city and actual experiences of searching for a better and fairer use of the city
