
While Joost Smiers, Director of the Research Centre at the University of the Arts in Utrecht/Netherlands, does not question "the legitimacy of a just remuneration of artists and authors for their work", he does not see, how this could be accomplished through copyright legislation, since the latter has turned into "one of the most commercial instruments of the 21st century... uncapable of protecting the interests of a majority of musicians, composers, actors, dancers, writers, designers, painters or stage and film directors."
