Joint Declaration on the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in Relation to the GATS-negotiations within the WTO

Published one month following the adoption of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (October 2005), the EAEA (European Arts & Entertainment Alliance) and PEARLE (Performing Arts Employmen Association League in Europe)published this joint declaration on the position of the performing arts sector in relation to the Articles of the Convention referring to the sovereignty of states to have domestic cultural policy and to publicly fund the arts.

It underlines the necessity for the UNESCO Convention to be respected in the negotiations of the WTO on the GATS.They call for the European Commission and its member states to adopt the UNESCO Convention as soon as possible.
