This study looks at arts education in European countries, reflecting on the competing demands that influence its organisation and content - including international competition, migration and multiculturalism, advances in technology and the development of the knowledge economy.

The qestions posed by the study include:

Do all areas in the curriculum have equal weight? What is the place of arts in national curricula?
What are the aims of arts education? Do all goals have equal weight?
How are teachers prepared for arts teaching and what opportunities exist for them to update their skills? How do educational systems monitor standards of teaching in the arts?
Are professional artists involved in arts education, and if so, how?
How should the arts curriculum respond to the development of new technology, new media and the recommendation for more cross-curricular work?
