I’m one of the official artists of the Elephant Parade 2010.
The Elephant Parade, is an innovative fundraising and public awareness campaign for the endangered Asian elephant. Billed as the capital's largest ever public art exhibition, Elephant Parade will embrace all that is excellent about London and will highlight every green initiative of the capital’s top businesses.
The design of my elephant is based on my original painting ‘I am patchwork'; this painting is based on the theme of identity, in essence that were are all made as a result of all the different pieces, ideals, dreams and nightmares, backgrounds and circumstances of ourselves, where the small pieces put together make the whole. I wanted my Elephant to be like that, to be made up of a series of pieces of patchwork as a beacon to its magic, its complexity and majestic nature. My Elephant is made up with highly detailed squares superimposed upon each other; I used really bright colours and metals like gold, silver and copper as highlights, although a poignant issue of conservation, I wanted my Elephant to be a true celebration of the Asian Elephant.
My elephant is currently in Berkeley Square, Mayfair from until the 23rd June 2010.
Miniatures of 'Patchwork Elephant' along with the Elephant Parade Book will be available to buy from Selfridges this summer.
