Milena Placentile

Greetings,

I am a contemporary art curator, writer, and consultant currently living in Winnipeg, Canada.

Over the past few years, I've worked with a variety of museums and galleries. I hold a Master of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto. My major research paper, "Who are we doing this for anyway: Engaging diverse audiences through curatorial practices in contemporary art", is the basis for ongoing research concerning audience-centered curatorial practices and integrated public programming.

I strive to produce exhibitions that are transparent, collaborative, and demonstrate equal consideration for the ideas and objectives of artists, and the ideas and experiences of audiences. I believe in embracing diversity and cross-cultural exchange, and in producing exhibitions that underscore the importance of contemporary art to everyday life as an invaluable means for reflection, research, critique, and empowerment. I seek to facilitate relationships between artists, and between artists with new audiences, because I envision art galleries as spaces where community building and dialog can take place among numerous other functions. I look forward to creating further opportunities for collaboration between artists and other professionals, between arts organizations, and with other curators.

Recent projects include "My Culture Includes My Scene" (Ottawa 2005), "Trust Us, We're Artists" (Toronto, 2006), and "Rehab: Weaning Youth Arts off Corporate Crack" (Toronto, 2007). Forthcoming projects include "No Time to Lose," which will show at Peacock Visual Arts (Aberdeen, 2008).
