The last day of the Mutamorphosis conference was held in a completely paradoxical situation. Police cars and vans driving around the Municipal Library, helicopters, sirens...
There were, we heard latter, Neo-Nazi demonstrations that have ended in fighting with anti-fascists and police, it was the date of the Cristal Night
We were warned to watch the way to the performance by a French sound artist Joachim Montessuis Safe distance revisited.
The sound and transcribed text of the material used comes from the black box of the NATO airplane that crashed nearby Novi Sad and was forwarded to the public by Apsolutno for the first time at Worldinformation.org in Amsterdam, not far away from Den Haag Court.
Displaced from the original circumstances both in time and space and de-contextualised it was functioning like a sample of the siren for the air-raid (red alarm) used by a German DJ in the post-war country; it has emptied its auditorium.
Why indeed artists use such materials? Are they feeling "radical"? And is there any place for activism left, actually in the displaced world?
Why actually the same artist didn't try to see what happens if Hitler's speech was used instead in Prague? Or try to make a performance with a black box in Serbian discotheque?
Indeed a very safe distance.
