Caractéristiques significatives

The exhibition’s motto "Urban Affairs" is a bilateral approach to addressing participating artists as well as interested visitors to identify uniqueness as well as similiarities among new artistic intersections in Street Art.

Contexte & hypothèse

In Berlin, Street and Urban art forms are an integral part of the citiy’s public image and for this reason it is attracting more and more international attention. Many artists, art-lovers and tourists travel to Berlin each year to scan the city searching for new artworks. The great appeal of Street Art is based on the fact that this virgin art genre is mostly exhibited publicly and is therefore enjoyed by a broad audience.

Description du projet

Urban Affairs introduces a generation of artists who confront the challenge of working in public spaces to develop new forms of artistic approaches. As the name suggests, “Street Art,” with its striking and recognisable motifs, is found in the metropolises of today's urban society - adopting, reviving and influencing multiple aspects of collective urban life. Applied Street Art techniques such as graffiti writing, stencil, painting, readymade, collage, drawing and graphic design on Berlin's streets is transferred to the exhibition rooms.

The first weekend of the four-week exhibition is designed as a public event. Each visitor has the opportunity to participate actively in the creation process of urban artwork and can take a look over the shoulder of professional street artists.

The exhibition presents more than 25 internationally renowned artists from eight different countries, mainly Germany, Spain and Poland, but also from Hungary to Greece and Canada. Participants show their work in the exhibition hall during the first weekend together, as well as individually.

The exhibition is organised by Riot-Arts (Agency for Urban Contemporary Art) and Stockartist, a hybrid art project that develops new approaches in today’s contemporary art market. The project is in partnership with the Culture Circle Gallery, the ATM Gallery, the Kolektiv Berlin and the Gallery Zero and supported by The issue of ArtFacts, Montana, Mitte’s Backpacker, the Polish Institute and the Foundation for German-Polish Cooperation.
