This is an introductory guide to the cultural sector in Romania and its different artistic sub-sectors, with a focus on those organisations that have an interest, ability or track record in international cooperation. In the context of the lack of centralised, coordinated and updated information about the different artistic areas, this study is an informative review, more than an analytical or critical one. It is a tool that aims to offer access to the Romanian cultural field by mapping out its different sectors and their main players. A deliberate focus has been given to the independent scene for which limited information exists in a comprehensive form. Some 270 key public institutions, higher education institutions, professional organisations, associations, major museums and public theatres, NGOs, independent companies, galleries, publishing houses, projects and events, journals and online resources are listed with their complete contact data and a short description of their mission and activities. Each of the artistic fields mapped out is preceded by a short historical overview and a presentation of the current situation. This general picture of the Romanian cultural sector is placed in the context of general evolutions in the field of international cooperation over the past 15 years. It is one of the main resources for organisations and artists interested in developing cooperation with Romania. An updated version in English and French is under preparation.
