This annual festival, which has been going since 1995, raises the visibility of high-quality innovative work by women artists, theoreticians and activists from all over the world. The festival approach draws attention to art and culture produced by female artists without applying or reinforcing stereotypes surrounding the gender issue.

Using a network of international curators and selectors, the festival invites between 40 and 60 women artists and intellectuals, attracts 6000-7000 visitors, and establishes fresh collaborationwith similar organisations in the region and throughout Europe.

The City of Women festival has helped place the city of Ljubljana on Europe's cultural, intellectual and social map.

The key features of the festival are:

• An annual theme of artistic, cultural and socio-political relevance.
• The organisation of international events that introduce artists from under-represented communities and distant countries or regions that are rarely presented in Slovenia.
• Collaboration between artists and intellectuals as well as artists and organisations in Slovenia and neighbouring countries. This includes the touring of artists, particularly within South East Europe.
• Reaching out to a broad and diverse audience and encouraging its active participation. This is achieved by means of a varied programme, unconventional or controversial events in so-called mainstream venues and the appearance of renowned artists in so-called alternative spaces, and support for dialogue between artists and audiences.
