3///3...three walls on wednesdays...

(Started in 2010)

WHAT IS THE MAIN IDEA OF THE PROJECT AND WHO IS THE TARGET GROUP?

3///3...three walls on Wednesdays... was created to take art where art is not readily available. By making the walls portable and easy to carry, the project travels to areas in Athens where no galleries or cultural centres exist. The target group is the population in general who live in different parts of Athens.

Blanka Amezkua sums up the main idea of the project as follows: "It is a collaborative process... artists and the public will activate the walls... organic grown project... open invitation... transportable... movable... transient... courageous... temporary... new prototype of public art display... non-linear... anybody can access the project... no charge... respond to the space... free invite... people come across art in unexpected places displayed in an unexpected way... DIY space... building bridges of communication with others... visual messages... you just carry it out... flexible... thrusting into the unknown... spontaneous... the physical premise is no longer static... it is time to move the walls!"

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT INCLUDE?

The project is an open invitation for national and international artists to exhibit on the three portable walls. The walls are versatile and can stand on their own, be folded or placed on the ground. Everything is documented on the project website and the project's Facebook page, so people can follow what happens with the walls and also get to see the art that is being displayed.

Each artist shows their work on two Wednesdays, for six hours each day. Blanka Amezkua provides information about the artist in Greek and English.

WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THE COLLABORATION WITH EACH PARTNER?

"I decided to collaborate with The Meet Market because they have been around for two years, they support local creativity and they give their creators an opportunity to share their work with the city. The creative director of this organisation is someone with an open mind who is extremely enthusiastic about creating projects that give artists possibilities to bring more culture to Athens." Blanka Amezkua

HOW IS THE PROJECT FINANCED?

"Right now, we only have the support of the Mexican consulate in Athens. All other expenses are currently covered by the participating artists and myself. We are looking for funding at the moment." Blanka Amezkua

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE PROJECT ENCOUNTERS DIFFICULTIES?

"The idea is to take the walls to the streets and see people's reaction/comments to the art being displayed. If I encounter problems with local officials, then my next step will be to present the project to businesses or locals that are located in the areas where there are no galleries or cultural centres and explain the intention of the project, in order to guarantee a hassle free Wednesday art display." Blanka Amezkua

WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?

"My dream would be to incorporate a mandatory 3///3 for each art student in the world! Upon their last year, before graduation, all artists should have the opportunity to share the work with the public in the public realm. It is so important to understand how public art display can be the beginning of a wonderful and challenging dialogue between the public and the artist." Blanka Amezkua

WHY IS COOPERATION IMPORTANT?

"I collaborate and cooperate with others in order to learn from others. These exchanges are vital for healthy organisations. Besides, sharing your public and projects with others only benefits and makes your organisation become a healthy one and a stronger one.“ Blanka Amezkua

ANYTHING WE'VE FORGOTTEN TO ASK?

"Why does art matter? Because it humanises us!" Blanka Amezkua

THANKS TO

Leonidas Alexandropoulos, The Meet Market, Alison Damianos, the Mexican consulate in Athens and all the artists who are sharing their work with 3///3 in Athens.
