Description du projet

SLUM-TV produces grassroots audiovisual and newsreel content at a local level in Mathare, the biggest slum in Kenya where 700,000 people live without electricity or running water. As well as being viewed by the population of Mathare, the content is made available on the Internet, serving as an archive of oral history that is available around the world. The producers are local slum dwellers who are usually ignored by conventional media and deprived of any kind of self-representation. Usually the slum and its population attract the attention of the media only in the context of violence, poverty or natural catastrophes.

This project provides slum dwellers with audiovisual production skills to develop new and creative ways of providing jobs, particularly to the young population. The project also intends to develop alternative nationwide distribution channels to supply the market with materials that can make an impact on the Kenyan population, such as Nigerian film industry productions, known as "Nollywood". One of the most successful TV producers from Nairobi, is a new member of the SLUM-TV Nairobi Trust, and the project is developing very good contacts to national distribution channels.

At the core of this project is the idea of developing an audiovisual format that covers important cultural and social issues in Kenya, and in the wider African region. It also intends to build a SLUM-TV website that serves as a kind of YouTube, linking different SLUM-TV units around the world, and producing a digital space for communicating and sharing experiences. SLUM-TV will not only have feeds from Nairobi, but also from Eastern Europe, Latin America and South-East Asia.
