Provides local and regional authorities with a voice within the EU, bringing citizens closer to EU institutions.
The COR gives opinions whenever new proposals are made in areas that have repercussions at local and regional levels. It may also draw up opinions on its own initiative, enabling it to move issues up the EU agenda. It works in policy areas such as: economic and social cohesion; employment, vocational training, education and culture; transport; and the environment. Cultural issues are the responsibility of the Commission for Culture, Education and Research (EDUC).
