First European strategy for culture-will it contribute to intercutural understanding and economic growth?

The first ever European strategy for culture in the globalised world was adopted in May, emphasising three major objectives:
- Promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue
- Promotion of culture as a catalyst in the framework of the Lisbon strategy
- Promotion of culture as a vital element of the Union's internal relations
There is a good will in the policy statement for a more structured and efficient cooperation among the member states and the EU institutions on cultural matters, as well as a closer involvement of the "cultural sector" to the "European affairs" through improving the dialogue via a "Cultural Forum".

How much the "cultural sector" knows about the European affairs, incl. the Lisbon strategy objectives; and to what extend the EU officials are informed and aware of artistic practices and needs in diverse countries around Europe? How both sides understand and implement the "intercultural dialogue" as a priority direction of cultural policies and practices, especially in 2008? Let's hope the start up of the planned dialogue will help in this respect.
