This report has been drawn up according to the Council of Europe/ERICarts methodology for reports on cultural policies (Grid for National Country Profiles) in the “Compendium of Cultural Policies and Trends in Europe”.
It is the first time that this kind of report has been produced about a national cultural policy that is sustained without a state government.
Catalan culture has traditionally been based on a strong civil society that has drawn together its local community and has often efficiently stood in for political power when the latter was not strong enough, or when Catalonia’s national identity was directly suppressed.
The report outlines how Catalan public cultural policies are the outcome not only of the sum of the cultural policies implemented at various levels of government, but also of increasingly intense and fruitful cooperation and consensus with private cultural agents.
