CREATED FOR ISTANBUL 2010 

Set out with the slogan of “There exist another İstanbul!”, garajistanbul’s istanpoli started with KASSAS in the framework of the cultural capital program ISTANBUL 2010, continiues with PERFORMANCE(career ender). A New York artist Claude Wampler who will present a career ender performance in Istanbul, is giving a presentation of her works and speak about her process and methodology.

For garajistanbul, Claude Wampler will convert PERFORMANCE (career ender) which she previously showed in different cities, to Istanbul version of PERFORMANS (kariyer bitiren). Wampler will be working with the people of Istanbul to develop the work. She wants every member of the audience to have an authentic experience. PERFORMANCE (career ender) is an attempt to find a new beginning, or a clean ending. The phrase career ender isn’t ironic, the artist says that every new artwork can be a “career ender”.

This work by artist Claude Wampler, titled PERFORMANCE (career ender), completes Wampler’s twelve-year cycle of creating experimental artworks that combine elements of visual art and performance and that call attention to the viewers’ role as audience.  Presenting this work in a theater, Wampler demonstrates a continued interest in how both the formality and playfulness that are present in a theatrical context regulate an audience’s behavior and expectations that, when either dashed or met, complete the work and act as the essential final touch. Working at the intersection of art installation and performance, for the past ten years Claude Wampler has been engaging and experimenting with questions of liveness and the art object, concealment and revelation, the performance of the spectator, and the productivity of failure. Wampler uses video, painting, photography, lighting, sound, sculpture, costume, texts - any means necessary - to explore the possibilities and value of grafting performance technique onto visual expression and vice versa.
