Transient Spaces: call for summer camp and production grants

A call is open for applications to the summer camp taking place 3-11 September in Palanga (Lithuania) and for research and production grants within the two year project Transient Spaces – The Tourist Syndrome.

This interdisciplinary project focus on the relationships between contemporary tourism and migration, spanning from research, theory, practice, workshops, seminars, conferences and art exhibitions in Italy, Lithuania, Romania and Germany.

Migration and tourism have been traditionally two extremes of human mobility with very little in between. Migration referred mostly to a permanent change of one’s place of residency in search for better labour conditions (or peace and political freedom in the case of asylum). Tourism on the other side meant a short-term travel for leisure purposes. Current global mobility assumes many new faces, durations and purposes. Besides low skilled workers and asylum seekers, we find also students, high skilled professionals and retired. Basically they still look for improving their living and working conditions, but not only salaries make them move, also simply the weather. On top movements are less linear and tend to be circular, temporary and transnational. These changes are the motto for the Transient Spaces project.

The Tourist Syndrome summer camp invites artists, architects, cultural producers, theorists, and academics to dialogue and exchange on new forms of mobility. The camp will be open to a maximum of fifty participants to be selected through this call. Participation is free of charge. The selected participants will be responsible for their journeys yet basic accommodation is provided by the organization.

Secondly, Research and Production Grants will be assigned to artists and practitioners submitting detailed project proposals relevant to the project´s theme. The grants include travel and accomodation costs and production support. The selected projects, once realized, will be showed within a series of exhibitions taking place in 2010 in Naples, Bucharest, and Berlin.

Deadline for both apllications is 30th June. For details, please check the Transient Spaces website.

Transient Spaces is a project initiated by the Berlin art project space uqbar with financial support from the European Commission – Culture Programme and the Foundation of German Lottery.
