The conference started with a welcoming address with Czech Minister of Culture Václav Jehlička, French Minister of Culture Christine Albanel, Swedish Minister of Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth and Odile Quintin, Director General for Education and Culture at the European Commission.

Mr Jehličkapointed out that the Forum for Creative Europe was "the first step to find new instruments to implement a creativity-oriented policy". Swedish Minister of Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth added later that Sweden will in this sense organise in July the conference Promotive a creative generation in the framework of the presidency of the Council of the EU.

Odile Quintin then took the floor to remind us that the cultural sector accounts for 2.6% of EU's GDP (more than the car industry!). She also noted that the financial crisis should be seen as an opportunity to think about the sustainability of our economies - since there has been a major shift in the last 10 years from producing tangible goods to non-tangible services. This theme has also been tackled during the following keynote speech by Czech economist Tomáš Sedláček, in a great presentation named What makes the wealth of the nations. A video of this presentation is available here, and you definitely should have a look at it!
