Long Distance Relationship

As you already know all phenomena could become the inspiration for any artistic peace, so it can be the inspiration for film, whatever it is documentary, fiction, animation or experimentation. And the theme of long distance relationship is the basic key for documentary film LoveTrips.

LoveTrips is a documentary film about long distance relationships across Europe. On the question «Why are you making this film?» Carlo Pisani, director of the film, answers: «I'm making this film out of necessity and curiosity.» Pisani wanted to record nowadays through love stories of the people who are different and separated, and at the same time are close to the Other and opened towards them.

I do not know should I be happy or unhappy that I do not have experience of a long distance relationship. Experience of my dearest friends who have passed or are passing through the long distance relationships can not help me in solving this dilemma. Certainly, as in all other relationships between people, there are some good and some bad experiences.

However, I think that here is of a particular importance the fact that this kind of experiences of the people who are of different nationalities or who come from different countries, can show us how we are all different or, on the contrary similar. But maybe, this is the best solution to learn how to be tolerant and how to understand diverse cultures, identities and mentalities. But of course that I do not see long distance relationship as the only tool that can teach us to the tolerance. Here I am trying to contemplate important aspects of this kind of experience.

I think that communication between two lovers, whether they are in the same country or separated by borders, is exactly the one that changes our verbal behaviour and expression. Situations like waiting, longing, nights, letters, gossips, evacuations, almost always follow each love, both in the same country, region, city or in a long distance relationship. And just maybe we can expect that these figures are manifested in more intensive way in the love which is divided by borders.

However, it seems that exactly the artwork has a strong potential to explore how to feel those who love from a distance, how they change, how they communicate and how they cooperate. Cooperation is the incontestable fact of each relationship, but it certainly gets stronger in a long distance relationship. Keeping a long distance relationship stimulating takes a lot of planning and cooperation. In each relationship we give answers to questions like how, when and where, but can you imagine that you have to plan more precisely your time for transferring in touching love. Of course it alludes that love is here without transferring, here and now, no matter where is she or he.

So we can expect that the documentary film LoveTrips trough the experiences of divided persons shows some fragments of long distance relationship.

The work on this documentary has just started and authors are currently exploring couples across Europe. They are calling everyone interested in participation in this project to contact them till June 30 2009. You can find application form here and more about this project you can read here.

Initial funding has been secured by the European Cultural Foundation in January 2008.

Many of us around the world are in a long distance relationships. Weather our partner is in another country, city, state, province... Are you in a long distance relationship?
