LabforCulture recently sent out an open call inviting media art curators to propose a creative concept to celebrate its first anniversary. Sixteen high quality proposals were received from over a dozen countries across Europe, and after an intensive selection process by the jury consisting of Annet Dekker (Head of Exhibitions and Artlab, Netherlands Media Art Institute, Amsterdam, NL), Kelli Dipple (Webcasting Curator, Tate, London, UK) and the LabforCulture content development team, the winning concept by curator Ana Peraica was chosen. The presentation, accompanied by critical texts, documentation and reflections by the curator throughout the project, will go live on the site in early 2008.
Ana Peraica (1972, Split) is a freelance curator, theorist and post-academic researcher of art theory and new media based in Split and Amsterdam. She has published widely, both in books and cultural journals such as Springerin. Peraica has edited a book titled "Woman at the crossroads of ideologies" based on a project she curated in January / February 2007 (Split, Croatia), mainly focused on video art. Peraica has curated video art since 1998 (Split Film Festival 1998; ISEA2004 International Programming Committee, among others) and is currently co-moderating a discussion on women’s liberation movements and technology on the Leonardo ISAST list Yasmin.
Ana Peraica's curatorial project, Victims' Symptom: PTSP (post traumatic stress syndrome) and culture immediately stood out as critically important. In contrast to the dominant story lines of war, prevailing mass media coverage, statistical overviews of 'collateral damage' and provocative images of victims without voice, this project aims to work with artists and academics to reveal a more direct discourse with those affected. The project will invite international participation through an ongoing interactive space on the LabforCulture website. Commissioned artwork will serve as a catalyst to provoke debate.
