The Digital Artists Handbook is an up to date, reliable and accessible source of information that introduces you to different tools, resources and ways of working related to digital art. The goal of the Handbook is to be a signpost, a source of practical information and content that bridges the gap between new users and the platforms and resources that are available, but not always very accessible. The Handbook will be slowly filled with articles written by invited artists and specialists, talking about their tools and ways of working. Some articles are introductions to tools, others are descriptions of methodologies, concepts and technologies. The digital artist handbook is brought to you by folly and has developed out of ongoing consultation with artists working with technology, which has shown a need for removing the barriers for artists to use digital tools.

"There are lots of definitions of social software out there, ranging from the clinical ('software that enables people to connect through computermediated
communication') to the pragmatic ('stuff that gets spammed'). While doing research for a recent workshop, I came across a useful list of seven social software elements. These seven building blocks -identity, presence, relationships, conversations, groups, reputation and sharing - provide a good functional definition for social software. They're also a solid foundation for thinking about how social software works."

This is a lightly edited version of a keynote address Clay Shirky gave on Social Software at the O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference in Santa Clara on April 24, 2003, in which he talks about social software. “I want to talk about a pattern I've seen over and over again in social software that supports large and long-lived groups. And that pattern is the pattern described in the title of this talk: A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy.”
