The Promotion of Cultural Diversity via New Media Technologies: An Introduction to the Challenges of Operationalisation

Author: Lidia Varbanova - Date: 09 mar 2009, 16:27

This article examines what cultural diversity actually entails and assesses the important role of new media technologies in advancing that aim. It seeks to engage with the challenges of operationalising cultural diversity.

This edition of the European Audiovisual Observatory's publication IRIS plus presupposes that it is important to clarify potential meanings of cultural diversity and arising concepts if we wish to experience cultural diversity in the form of concrete results. The need for clarification becomes more pressing with a view to technological advances that challenge existing legal frameworks. IRIS plus is a first and very useful step in the contextualisation of cultural diversity in the broader perspective of culture and cultural rights.
