This work explores the discrepancy between identity politics in European countries and the cultural policies of the European Union.
It uncovers how European cultural policy tackles the growth of xenophobic and intolerant national politics and how cultural policy could be enhanced. Special attention goes to the notion of culture from a philosophical, anthropological and political point of view, as well as to the political nature of the EU, the mechanism of subsidiarity and the outcomes of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue (2008).
