Challenges for Mobility: Recommendations from the visual arts sector

Author: Lidia Varbanova - Date: 28 sep 2010, 09:52

A report resulting from an experts' meeting of the International Association of Art in Germany (IGBK) on 'Mobility in the visual arts sector in Europe' that took place in Linz, Austria, in December 2009.

The meeting was part of the EU project ‘Urban Interventions: Artistic perspectives for the urban space’, coordinated by the Austrian city of Linz. Delegates of artists’ associations and practitioners in the fields of residencies and service/information were invited, as well as delegates of European/international organisations. Experts from existing studies and (pilot) projects and members of the working group ’Mobility of artists and other professionals in the cultural field’ also took part. Culture Action Europe was a partner of the event.

The meeting focused on existing obstacles facing mobile visual artists and how to reduce these. Discussions related to four topics: customs and taxation; visa regulations; information: access and coordination; and supporting schemes.

This summary includes recommendations and further steps about how to deal with mobility problems at the EU level and within the member states.
