G.L.F. (GRAFFITI LIBERATION FRONT)

In collaboration with the artist Nacho Magro and the Bilbao collective, Consonni, G.L.F. is an artistic project that analyses graffiti and other forms of (re)presentation of urban subculture as signs that produce symbols that represent an ideology, as well as the appropriation by certain social groups of tools that allows them to have a form of expression of their own from their position in society. G.L.F. also analyses the capitalization and commercialisation of this kind of aesthetic and the formalisation of its radicalism within the system itself. To do this they offer a historical overview of the various expressions of graffiti writing, from its origins in deprived areas of New York in the 1960s- a cry to the wind, with no apparent aims, that echoed all over the city- and the situationist and assembly movements of May 68 in France- with Il est interdit d’interdire and Ne travaillez jamais from 1952 as banners- to hip-hop culture or the Afro-American aesthetic of wearing low-slung trousers to evoke the ban on wearing belts in prisons. The short season is made up of documentaries, experimental films and animated short, medium-length and feature films from the USA, France, Spain and Brazil.

There will also be a debate session in which various experts will deal with the following subjects, in accordance with the aims of the season: From a look at public space and its trivialisation, presented by Francesc Muñoz, lecturer in Urban Geography at the Autonomous University of Barcelona; From graffiti to urban art, presented by Remedios Vicent, expert in mediation between residents who own walls and urban artists, Pablo España, member of the Democracy collective and lecturer at the European University in Madrid, and Mischa Caníbal, skateboarder, artist, anarcho-capitalist businessman and independent curator. These presentations will be followed by a round table session in which local players will take part with Nacho Magro, one of the coordinators of this season and a specialist in Public Art at Valencia Polytechnic University, as moderator.
