The Point is delighted to announce choreographer Ben Wright is to become its resident artist, the first Resident Artist @ The Point.
Ben Wright and his company, bgroup, will take up the two-year residency at the
Eastleigh venue at the end of this month (October 2012).
As one of the UK’s most interesting and inventive contemporary choreographers Ben
is an ideal match for The Point’s environment for nurturing and supporting
adventurous and ambitious new work. The residency provides Ben with, among other
things, rehearsal space and accommodation in The Point’s award-winning Creation
Space as well as its dance studio; production time; and support from the venue’s
creative team. The residency will also bring the choreographer into regular dialogue
with patrons and visiting artists.
In turn, as part of the residency Ben will become a mentor for one or more of The
Point’s associate artists; will offer open rehearsals while in residence; host
professional classes; and enable The Point to develop a “dance hub” – a group invited
to follow the progress of the choreographer over the two years.
The Resident Artist @ The Point is part of the venue’s Making Space programme that
supports the creation of new work and practise. It marks the first time an artist has
been invited for an extended time to the venue, with the express goal of sharing and
facilitating the creative journey, opening up the process to new audiences.
Speaking about the residency, The Point’s Artistic Director Sarah Brigham said: “We
are delighted to welcome Ben as our Resident Artist. Ben’s honest and sensitive
approach to his work and other artists around him resonates with The Point’s long
term investment into artists through our support from Arts Council England. The
special quality his work exudes will no doubt enable us to develop and nurture not
only his, but our dance audiences over the next two years.”
On becoming the first Resident Artist @ The Point, Ben said: “My company bgroup
and I are very pleased to be Resident Artists at The Point. The Point has supported
my work over the past few years, and this relationship will allow me to support their
aims as well as continue to develop our relationship with their audiences, artists and
staff.”
