The centre was inspired by the legacy of the Spanish artist Beulas and his personal art collection in Huesca, Spain. Inaugurated in 2006, the centre's building is a masterpiece of design by the Spanish architect, Rafael Moneo. The centre represents the intersection of contemporary art and nature and grew out of the local district's Art and Nature project, which has attracted renowned international land artists like Richard Long and David Nash for the past 15 years.
