Odysseus auf der Suche nach Europa

Odysseus – A Quest for Europe

Brief description

The Goethe-Institut takes the visitor on a virtual journey through the idea of Europe, inspired by the legend of Odysseus. Media artists, photographers, philosophers and modern-day nomads reveal an aspect of European identity, based on an – entirely subjective – view of their chosen location.

Significant features

Every week during Germany's Presidency of the European Union, the focus has been on a different aspect of Europe, offering new and sometimes surprising insights and perspectives into people and places in Europe.

Context & scenario

To experience "Europe" as more than a geographical unit, it is important to focus on its common cultural roots, its common topics. The awareness of Europe's historical legacy and the modern diversity of its cultures are what truly define the European identity today. It is an identity that thrives on the interplay of forms, which are constantly being renegotiated and rearranged with a view to the future, in a process that does not seek fulfilment but is itself a form of fulfilment. Thus it is the quest itself that becomes the defining feature of Europe's cultural identity. And it is exactly this quest they are trying to represent by 26 very different artistic approaches to Europe that show a united entity in its virtual form on the internet.
