Artists moving & learning

WHAT IS THE MAIN IDEA OF THE PROJECT AND WHO IS THE TARGET GROUP?

Artistic mobility promotes cultural diversity. Cross-border mobility of artists, cultural professionals and works of art is therefore at the core of the 2007 European Commission Communication, “A European agenda for culture in a globalizing world”. In the Commission’s own words, this was “the first ever European strategy for culture” and was subsequently endorsed by the Council for Culture Ministers.

Artists moving & learning reflects community action on cross-border artistic mobility and analyses the impact of artists' mobility in Europe.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT INCLUDE?

What are the effects of artists' cross-border movements – as bursaries in artists’ residencies or as guest artists in festivals, museums or galleries? Does mobility boost artists' creativity? Can non-formal learning resulting from artistic mobility be formalised by integrating it into professional education for artists? How can instruments for life-long learning better target the needs of mobile artists?

To examine these questions, the Artists moving & learning partners conducted interviews with artists from the performing and visual arts in the following EU Member States: Belgium, France, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and the UK. The analysis of these interviews is part of a pan-European comparative study.

The study seeks to prove that artists' journeys across borders within Europe and beyond leads them to acquire new skills and create new forms of artistic expression. The study also addresses recommendations about how policy-makers and professional organisations can further improve support of mobile artists in their career development, and how their mobility experiences could be better recognised as part of life-long learning paths.

The list of events and meetings in the project can be seen here.

HOW IS THE PROJECT FINANCED?

The project is supported by the European Commission under the framework of the Life-long Learning Programme - Multilateral Projects, Networks, Accompanying Measures.
