Designing the Future Programme of Cultural Co-operation for the European Union after 2006

The European Commission consultation was launched in 2003 with the goal of helping to improve the Union's support mechanisms for cultural cooperation with particular emphasis on the enlarged EU and its new member states. The results of the consultation contributed to the development of a new Culture 2000 programme launched in 2006-2007. The current objectives of the Commission's programme to promote transnational cultural cooperation are three-fold: strengthening the mobility of artists and of professionals in the cultural sector; promoting the circulation of works; supporting intercultural dialogue and exchange. Greater visibility is to be given in order to make EU citizen's more aware of the role of Europe in cultural cooperation and in the promotion of cultural diversity. Guidelines on inter-institutional cooperation and on the culture industries are to be drawn up. The consultation was open for three months from April-July 2003.
