Founded in 1995 as an independent theatre centre under the artistic direction of Jurij Alschtz and Christine Schmalor. It aims at research and exploration of theatre processes by promoting educational and training activities.

It joined forces with KOINE (France), PROTEI (Italy) and SCUT (Scandinavia), theatre centres with common history and missions, to form the European Association for Theatre Culture. In 2006 it was designated as the Research Centre of the Theatre Education & Training Committee of the International Theatre Institute / UNESCO.
