W & T

Brief description

A collaborative theatre project including Italian, Macedonian and Croatian artists. The performance deals with the theme of power, and the idea has been to see how artists from different cultures, societies and political surroundings work together when dealing with these topics.

Significant features

W & T is a parable on power, incomprehension and cruel laws generating conflicts on a large scale. Tito is a marginal figure in this performance, but all the questions it poses refer to controversies that multiply around his personality as a dictator and a social benefactor.

Context & scenario

The script was adapted by Branko Brezovec, who combined Gabriele D'Annunzio's play Gloria and the war story Black Orchid by the Slovenian writer Edvard Kocbek. These are two seemingly incompatible and contrasting texts: the first one strong and epic, set in the times of the Roman Empire. The other one, more naturalistic and with strong existential insights, set in World War II during battles between Yugoslav partisans and the German army. The musical scores are composed by Macedonian composer Marjan Nekak, and the set is created by Croatian art historian and curator Tihomir Milovac. The actors come from Croatia, Italy and Macedonia.

Project description

The project was prepared in Zagreb and Florence. All the members of the crew were together for almost two months, participating in the development of the project. The main idea, with Tito's character as the backbone and two different texts creating the script, was to research the perception and comprehension of everlasting values but also human inclinations transposed in different cultures.

Members of the crew come from Italy, an EU country with a long history and great influence in the development of the political, social and cultural image of present day Europe. They also come from Croatia, a country on Europe's very doorstep that finds itself culturally strangled between two opposite worlds with one dominant religion. The artists also come from Macedonia, a country with a very difficult political situation, with a strongly religious population divided between two strong beliefs.

All these issues are somehow connected to the character of Tito, who in one way or another influenced a much wider geographical area than just ex-Yugoslavia. By questioning these issues through his personality, it somehow reflects a mirror image of the present European state.

The W & T performance is part of a bigger project entitled Tito the Fourth Way, which includes numerous producers and artists. Three co-producers collaborated in the production – Eurokaz, Laboratorio Nove and Theatre &td. Each of them participated in the project contributing with material resources, organisation and assuring participation of different artists and actors.

The project included close collaboration between artists on the creation of the performance. After the premiere in Florence, at the festival Intercity, it was presented in Zagreb, Macedonia, Italy, Hamburg, Leibniz and now it is being considered for invitations to other festivals.
