theater magdeburg is one of the leading producing art and culture institutions of the province of Saxony Anhalt. It is a fully subsidized nonprofit organization. Theater Magdeburg is serving the 230.000 inhabitants of the city of Magdeburg as well as tens of thousands of people in the areas surrounding Magdeburg and in the neighbouring provinces. The structure comprises an opera company, an acting ensemble, a ballet company, and a philharmonic orchestra, and all the necessary staff to make a big theatre work – around 430 people on payroll. Performances take place on a daily basis at the Opernhaus Magdeburg (Magdeburg Opera House) featuring a 700 seats main space and a 40 seats studio space, and at the Schauspielhaus Magdeburg (Magdeburg Playhouse) providing a 200 seats main stage, a 85 seats studio space, and a 60 seats lounge. Theater Magdeburg is opening more than 30 new stage productions per season. The season starts in September and ends in July allowing for a 6 weeks summer break in between.
The Schauspielhaus Magdeburg is a young contemporary playhouse. Productions include dramatic literature of all times and places, genres and aesthetics – from Greek tragedy to Shakespeare, from the Bourgeois Age of theatre art to Modernism and the Contemporary. A modern repertory company, Schauspiel Magdeburg is particularly dedicated to German as well as international contemporary drama. The playbill combines diverse and strong artistic views and styles. It explores all the different forms, shapes and concepts of performance. Schauspielhaus Magdeburg is offering full repertory productions as well as a diversified night and side programming – cinema, jazz, night café, staged readings, panel discussions, sunday brunches and much more.
Special attention is being turned to young audiences. Kids and young adults are offered educational and creativity programs as well as a number of high level TYA repertory productions each season. Theater Magdeburg is also featuring the biggest and most productive theatre youth club of Germany presenting up to 10 and more youth club theatre projects each year.
