The first day of the Inside Out 2007 conference, or rather the first evening is nearly over. While I'm writing this, most of the participants are at the jazz concert in Fabryka Trzciny - the closing event of today's programme. Entering the Fabryka Trzciny cultural centre I was still wondering what to write about on this blog, what perspective to take. Finally I decided to present some "light" content, not an extended official report. Frankly speaking, a standard "report" would be rather inadequate as today's meeting was only an introduction. Of course, some organisational matters were mentioned and pleasant words of welcome said. It was nice to hear the EFAH's President Raj Isar referring to the Polish history. He even quoted from the "Invocation" to "Pan Tadeusz" - the 19th century great Polish epic by Adam Mickiewicz. His words and the interior of the Fabryka Trzciny became an interesting composition, an emphasis of different levels of Polish tradition. Fabryka Trzciny is a former factory but it alsko served as a prison during the dark communist period. And now, it hosts a meeting of those believing in the united Europe. This place is a kind of signum temporis - the visualisation of the progress and of a new approach to the municipal space.

Just after 7:00 PM professor Robert Hewison from the City University of London started his welcome speech which I found really interesting. In my modest opinion it was quite an anti-bureaucracy talk which raises my hope for an innovative character of the Inside Out 2007. He mentioned the case of Michelangelo. This great Renaissance artist who created commonly known works that significantly contributed to the image of Europe enjoyed something what nowadays we would probably call "the real artistic freedom". I mean, he didn't have to go through all the annoying and discouraging procedures. Obviously, the times are changing and creators of our time must somehow deal with them, it seems impossible to avoid the non-artistic side of the creative process. However, there has been so much said about the need for liberalisation of law concerning the sphere of arts but in many parts of the world so little has been done. I could have mentioned here many theories and projects related to this case, but it's not an academic blog. The title of this post comes from the aforementioned Robert Hewison's speech. "What we need is something vertical, but horizontal..." could mean: Europe needs a real compromise that would ensure a REAL sustainable development and access to culture that we all would want to share. Not a pyramid of values, but a common ground.

Tomorrow, together with Iwona Wyżga, we will give you more concrete information on specific speeches. We are also going to interview some EFAH members and other persons participating in the Inside Out 2007 conference.

Pierwszy dzień, a raczej pierwszy wieczór konferencji Inside Out 2007 dobiega końca. Kiedy piszę te słowa, większość uczestników słucha jeszcze koncertu jazzowego kończącego dzisiejsze spotkanie. Wchodząc do Fabryki Trzciny wciąż myślałem jak ten blog powinien wyglądać i zdecydowałem się na lżejszą formę. Zresztą, "raport" byłby raczej niestosowny, ponieważ dzisiejszy dzień był zaledwie wstępem. Mówiono o sprawach organizacyjnych, były też gorące poitania. Prezydent EFAH, Raj Isar cytowal nawet "Inwokację", co w połączeniu z wnętrzem Fabryki Trzciny stanowiło ciekawą kompozycję, zderzenie różnych poziomów polskiej historii. Praskie centrum kulturalne, niegdyś zaklad przemysłowy, a także sowieckie więzienie w ciemnych komunistycznych latach. A teraz goości osoby wierzące w ideę zjednoczonej Europy. Signum temporis...

Po 19:00 profesor Robert Hewison z City University w Londynie rozpoczął swą interesujacą mowę. Według mnie, miała ona dość anty-biurokratyczny podtekst, co budzi nadzieję na nowatorski charakter Inside Out 2007. Przytoczył historię Michała Anioła, renesansowego mistrza, który nie cieszył sie tym, co dziś moglibyśmy nazwać "prawdziwą artystyczną wolnością". Krótko mówiąc, ten ważny dla europejskiej tradycji twórca nie musiał borykać się z deprymujacymi procedurami formalnymi. Oczywiście, czasy sie zmieniaja i obecni artyści muszą jednak radzić sobie z nie-artystyczną stroną twórczej dzialalności. Wiele na ten temat powiedziano, mógłbym tu przytoczyć niejedną teorię, ale to nie jest blog akademicki. Angielskie słowa: "What we need is not something vertical, but horizontal..." znaczą w tym przypadku: "Potrzebujemy wspólnej płaszczyzny, a nie piramidy wartości...". Chyba w tej krótkiej frazie tkwi sens prawdziwie zrównoważonego rozwoju i spolecznego kompromisu.

Jutro, wraz z Iwoną Wyżgą zaprezentujemy relację z poszczególnych przemówień i zaprezentujemy wywiady z członkami EFAH i innymi uczestnikami Inside Out 2007.
