The jewellery pieces in styles ranging from inlay work to Artist Shipra Bhattacharya’s paintings titled She is in tune with her work on fantasy – figuring a stylized woman who is a participant and spectator of the urban drama, while Shuvaprasanna  represents the urban milieu of Calcutta, the city to which he belongs and his work is about divinities, cityscapes, crows and owls. Seema Kohli’s highly complex and detailed women-centric paintings is about the feminine power while Dimpy Menon’s sculptures are realistic and delicately carved. Satish Gujral’s bronze sculptures are powerful renditions of his fascination with form while Neeraj Goswami’s acrylics on canvas are about ethereal forms almost in a trance-like spiritual state.Says curator Sushma Bahl: “Art historians are able to re-construct the trajectory of a society and its culture, through analyzing the motifs and designs used for decorating the human body or objects of ritual and everyday use, from temple doors to earthen cookware, textile patterns to wearable ornaments. The collection featuring work by a dozen invited artists includes specially created meticulously executed art works – some that have been set into exquisite hand crafted art jewellery pieces as a necklace, armband, and earrings, while others as paintings for the walls and sculptures for the floor - displayed together. These unique and individual pieces of art and jewellery specially created, each only in single edition for the show, assume particular significance in this age of mass-production with repetitive patterns.”  Says Anu Bajaj, Director, Art Positive: “This is the seventh edition of our annual show Devotion and from the very beginning, the term has never meant for me being restricted to religious fervor. It also encompasses a positive attitude to life in its varied spheres, be it commitment to a cause, belief, person, profession or society. The idea to bring together art and jewellery together, by even some artists who have never worked with the latter, was to bring into focus human love for jewellery, as adornment, as precious possessions and as heirlooms or medallions, where art, design and craft all merge and coalesce as one.”
The current show, therefore, is based on the concept of Alankar which in Indian aesthetics implies embellishment, adornment and ornamentation that enhances the beauty of things and is conceived as integral to all forms of expressive language in visual and performing arts. The exhibition includes paintings and jewellery by some of India’s renowned artists including Satish Gujral, Shuvaprasanna, Neeraj Goswami, Paresh Maity, Dimpy Menon, Gurdeep Singh, Ramesh Gorjala, Seema Kohli, Shipra Bhattacharya, Thota Vaikuntam and Lalu Prasad Shaw.
