Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation

Verfasser: Timothée Guicherd - Datum: 24 jan 2011, 21:10

The foundation was set up in 1975 in memory of Alexander Onassis, the son of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, who died in an airplane crash in 1973. Culture, education, the environment, health and social achievement are the main priorities of the foundation, which focuses on Greece and Greek civilisation.

The foundation awards approximately 135 scholarships per year to Greek postgraduate students for studies abroad and in Greece in all fields of research. It also awards 45 scholarships per year for research and study within Greece for non-Greek and Cypriot candidates.

Scholarships are also awarded to artists in all fields of art, who either wish to attend courses in schools, academies and workshops abroad, or to continue with postgraduate university studies.

Since 1978, the foundation also awards the Onassis International Prizes for individuals or organisations in the fields of culture, social achievement and the environment. This includes a prize for immigrant integration and human development.

The foundation’s grants programme was discontinued in 2010 and the foundation has created a new multicultural space, the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens, which aims to present, project and encourage contemporary Greek culture and its dissemination beyond Greece.
