The collective theme of the artist’s work revolves around the intricate workings of the human body and the effect of physical pain on the spirit and soul. Kader uses her art as a liberating and therapeutic arena where science and abstract creative ideas converge to offer the viewer a bold new vision of the inner life of the body.
Living with the painful and visible manifestations of rare and little understood physical ailments known as Madelung's Deformity and Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis, Kader has struggled to come to terms with her own physicality and its role in how she understands herself and her relationship with the world around her. The condition has challenged her to explore the relationship between the interior and exterior workings of the human body. Her work is a collection of abstract paintings and figurative drawings of the body at a cellular level.
Kader’s interest in micro anatomy began at a young age when she had discovered Madelung’s Deformity. Over time Madelung’s had hindered my everyday life, creating numbness and pain in my upper extremities. Over time the Leri-Weill dyschondroteosis leaves the rest of her body in chronic pain. Repeated scans and operations to correct the distortion caused by this deformity, specifically to the bones in the arms, have changed Kader’s perspective on the way she paints and draws; now using both right and left wrist for everything.
Kader’s work applies a technique that involves layering and texturing using oil glazing and mixed media to get a variation in surfaces. Medical x-rays and images of the interior of my own body are the starting point of each piece. Layering allows me to symbolize my emotional changes as Kader’s body reforms. Her artwork has become the voyage she wishes to express, allowing her to educate others about the power of perseverance through her continued struggles with Madelung's. Her work is testimony to the fact that endurance always wins.
Laurie Kader lives and works in Montreal and obtained her Master’s in Art Education from Concordia University in 2006. Since the very young age of three, she has been expressing herself through art.
