We delve into the issues surrounding the cultural sector and the global financial crisis by inviting the esteemed Helmut K. Anheier to comment on the year ahead for us in How can the cultural sector survive the financial crisis?

Focusing on the concerns facing those working in the cultural sector, the article looks directly at the future role of governments and institutions, global, societal and economical trends and presents real suggestions for getting through the squeeze.

Is this a year we can all clean up our acts, tighten our belts and work hard at securing the past for the future? It is the Year of Creativity and Innovation, as deemed by the European Commission and maybe we need to embed these words into new organisational techniques to weather the storm.

Helmut K. Anheier from the Centre for Social Investment, University of Heidelberg & Center for Civil Society, University of California, Los Angeles, has a background in civil society, the nonprofit sector, philanthropy, organisational studies, policy analysis and comparative methodology. In 2008, he published Cultures and Globalization: The Cultural Economy.

Another article looking at issues surrounding the cultural sector and the financial crisis features Marc Garrett from Furtherfield.org interviewed by Art Is Open Source and is well worth a read : it is available online in English and Italian.

You can also join the debate and make your case on issues around the financial crisis in our discussion forum.
