Cultures From Around the Block

Kurzbeschreibung

Supports the exchange of information about intercultural neighbourhoods and the experience of grassroots organisations, using the examples of seven intercultural neighbourhoods.

Kontext und Szenario

The urban setting is both a place of integration and division. The Multicultural Centre Prague recognises the important role dialogue can play in overcoming the problems that often persist in ethnically diverse cities. The project aims to bring together young people from different ethnic groups living in the same city. Through workshops, they will document their surrounding via various mediums. The aim is to facilitate intercultural dialogue to build long-lasting ties between those in different communities. All project partners will initiate media arts projects in two diverse schools with students aged from 14 to 18; the children will document each other's neighbourhoods and thus learn about the different communities whilst promoting intercultural communication.

Projektbeschreibung

The project strategy includes five interlinked activities:

1. Creation of the website (http://www.europeancity.cz). The project website will not only serve as the fifth and final amalgamation of the product of Europe-wide intercultural dialogue, but also aims to become an online source for articles, studies and reports on urban issues. Making use of the media items from local workshops and providing additional background information, users are offered a vivid picture of European cultural diversity by strolling virtually through diverse European neighbourhoods.

2. Production of the documentary film "My street. Your street" with direct involvement of students from local media projects.

3. Presentation of the project results in the Festival "Dialogue of Cultures".

4. Public presentation of project results in Brussels.

5. The active encouragement of cross-country partnerships between all actors involved.

Thanks to the workshops, the students will not only become acquainted with a different part of the city they live in, but will also come in contact with young people of the same age but from a different social and cultural background.

The project methodology rests on the idea that common activities combined with pride in results are an effective way to overcome social barriers and prejudices, which otherwise often block interaction and communication beyond the borders of ethnic communities.

Each partner is responsible for their own local media project. Partners also are responsible for coordinating and organising the local events in connection with the project. A good choice of partner organisation is the most important thing when it comes to coordinating such a big project.

European Commission provides 80% of the overall budget.

"The structure of the project is sustainable for the future and the local media projects can continue even when the project finishes like independent and self-sufficient projects focused on local integration. As for our organisation, we're thinking of moving the photography workshops to different schools, and thus create a network of cultural diversity for children that will participate in our local media project." (Sarka Marouskova, project assistant and Anna Cincerova, local media project coordinator)
